With a new cat, how long of an adjustment period should I allow before deciding it is just Not working out?
We got a new cat 3 days ago, 1 yr old male. We had a great cat that died two weeks ago, and we got this new cat to help us move on, and give our heart and home to another cat. He is not mean , he let me bath him, he does not bite or scratch. But he doesnt want to be held, and hides all day long in the storage room. Right at 10 pm (3 nights in a row), he starts meowing, loudly, he suddenly has no fear and roams all around the house crying loudly. He does not want food, or water, or to be held. We dont know what he wants. I called the vet,& they said some cats vocalize at night,&we should kennel him in the garage at night. I only want tohave one pet right now,and I want the pet to be sociable with my children. If his antisocial behavior doesnt change, I want to rehome him, and get another cat that will interact w/my chidlren and not fear them. I realize I need to allow longer then 3 days, but how long then???
Some cats are just more vocal than others. This cat needs some space of his own, so get a cardboard box and put a towel or small rug in it for him to sleep in. To this cat you are still strangers, so time is needed to make the transition. Some cats never like to be held. If this cat lived in a household with other pets and other people, he may be just missing his previous situation. Are you spending a lot of time in his vicinity and talking to him? Let him come to you, and be patient. I’d give it at least 3 weeks, but you need to be aware that this cat can never be an immediate replacement for the cat you lost so you shouldn’t expect them to be alike. If, after 3 weeks you are not satisfied and it appears the cat isn’t satisfied either, then he needs to find a new home.
