Guard Ferret Cage
My ferret is losing hair! Help please =)?
Firstly.. It’s NOT adrenal disease, he doesn’t show any of the signs except fur loss around the base of his tail about half an inch out. He’s only losing fur because he chews at it so it must be itchy.
He has baths once a month which isn’t too often and i use a ferret shampoo which gets rid of mites etc..
He hasnt got mites or fleas or anything like that it’s just itching but he finds it better to chew instead of scratch.
Is there anything that will stop him from doing this, the fur grows back but he eventually chews it again. It’s starting to look better than it used to with his guard hairs coming back and some of his undercoat, all i need to know is thereanyway to stop him?
He lives in a huge plastic/Metal Cage in a normal room temperature environment and gets plenty of exercise.

he has orange waxy bit on his tail with black spots, not sure if its rats tail.
When my ferrets do something out of caracture or just something that seems odd i always first take them to the vet. That is always the first step.
A ferret who had Adrenal dose not have to have all the signs to have adrenal disease. Specialy in the start. Many ferrets never show symptoms at all untill they are very very sick. I suggest you have it checked for Adrenal disease.
There is something else. I have hear it called rat tail and it is usualy seasonal. Is your ferret ding this at only certain times of the year? Look at it’s tail. Do you see little black dots like black heads? If so this maybe what is wrong. If so wash his tail once a day with dawn dish washing liquid and use a acne pad on it. It should clear up soon.
One last thing. Bathing your farret once a month is too often. Anywhere ypou read about ferrets says that ferrets have dry skin and bathing them to often can cause dry itchy skin. Ferrets should never be bahed more than a couple times a year unless they get into something. Fequent bathing also will cause them to produce more oil. more oil means more smell.
