Finch Cages – Learn How to Purchase One That Will Last
Before bringing your new finch home, you must know how to pick a quality cage. There are many beautiful finch cages on the market, but not all of them are actually suited to finches. Finch cages can be costly so you want to be able to shop with confidence and only purchase the one that will work for you and your new feathered friend.
One of the most important things to consider when shopping for finch cages is the size. While finches can be housed in a smaller cage than other birds, the proportions of the cage are extremely important. Many parrots get their exercise through climbing as well as flying. Finches get the majority of their exercise through flying. This means that they will benefit more from a low long cage than a tall skinny one.
The size of the cage also depends on how many birds you are bringing home. Finches are social birds that should always be kept in pairs, at a minimum. A pair requires a cage that is at least 30 inches long. This will give them enough room to stretch their wings in flight. True finch cages will come in this length and many larger options as well.
When reviewing possible finch cages, more than just the length should be taken into consideration. You want to examine what the cage is made from. Most birdcages today are made from steel. Many of them actually come coated to change the color of the cage. It is preferred that you steer away from coated cages. While they are often perfectly safe, there is always the chance that your finch will peck at the coating and can get sick from ingesting it.
Finch cages should also have bars that are set close together. If the bars are spread too far apart, bad things can happen to your new friends. An annoying case would be that they squeeze between the bars and end up flying free around your house. Now, the finches may enjoy this, but if you have cats or dogs, this could end very badly. You will also end up with bird droppings in the weirdest of places when this happens. A worse case is when the bars are just slightly too far apart. Many birds have been known to get their heads stuck between the bars and perish.
The actual layout of finch cages is also an important thing to consider before buying. A well-designed cage has a bottom tray that is easily accessible. With small birds such as finches, a grate over the tray makes for even easier cleaning. You will also want a cage that offers plenty of spots to place sticks and toys for your birds’ enjoyment.
The most important thing to consider when shopping for finch cages is the overall quality of the cage, and these can vary as much in quality as they do in design. You want to look closely at any cage you are considering buying before you buy. A quality cage feels sturdy when you handle it, the bars are all connected at the joints, the doors open and close easily and everything latches together securely. Quality finch cages will last for decades.
