Knowing Finch Birds
Finches birds are small yet charming with beautiful singing voice especially the male finch. Most finches have beautiful vibrant colors and they are very active that you would feel relax just by watching them hop and fly inside their cage. Finches can grow from 3 to 10 inches in length. If you are to count the feathers in the tail of finches birds, there are 12 feathers and 9 of them are primary feathers. Finch birds can live 5 to 10 years, some even survived longer. These beautiful little birds are perfect even if you have a small living space. There are wide varieties of finches birds, all may differ in their physical appearance and behaviour. Popular pet finches are the zebra finches, gouldian finches and the society finches, but if you are not just planning of breeding finches, the zebra finches are more recommended because they are easier to breed.
Finches birds love flying as this is their form of exercise, you must be able to provide them with enough room for them fly around freely. But if the cage is not large enough, do not overcrowd the cage with toys and accessories, perches on the opposite sides of their cage will be sufficient enough for them. Finches are very active birds, they would only sit still on their perch to sleep and when awake they will be back to their normal activities of flying and hopping.
The three popular species of finches bird you may want to look at are:
- Gouldian Finches – probably have the most beautiful and vibrant colored feathers among finches. You must bear in mind that this kind of finches birds are sensitive to temperature change.
- Zebra Finches – this Finch Bird are perfect for novice bird enthusiast. They like human company and they come in different variety of colors.
- Society or Bengalese Finches – This kind of Bird Finches do very well in captivity and can be an excellent foster parent to other baby finches.
Although finches are mainly seed eaters, you may want to introduce other type of foods in their diet. Slices of fruits and vegetables are some of finches birds’ favorite while other specie would love live insects to be included in their diet as well.
Finch birds love bathing; try putting a separate bird bath in the bottom of their cage and what comes next will surprise you. You don’t have to worry if there will be two water dishes inside your finch cage, finches does not drink water from which they have bathed in. But always remember to keep the finch cage dry and clean to prevent the bird from getting ill.
