Bird Play Stand
How do i tame a lovebird ? I think hes 2 years old. My cousin was the previous owner. He never took him out of?
his cage and he didn’t even have many toys to play with. I took him from my cousin (asked my cousin of course) because i couldn’t stand the bird being all lonely and bored. So i would like to know how can i make him tame ? and where can i buy him cool toys and a bed like thing so he can sleep in it ?
step # 1, you need to do a lot of research, birds are very complicated creatures, even love birds and your last question frightens me a little bit. I recommend birds for dummies, read it cover to cover and it will tell you everything you could ever want to know. As far as training goes the first thing you need to do is get his wings clipped by a vet, it’s like getting a hair cut, it doesn’t hurt the bird it just renders him fairly flightless for a month or two, this will make him rely on you more for everything. Also before taking him out of his cage he needs to be more comfortable with you, just start by spending some time every day just looking at him in the cage ( make sure to turn your face to the left or right in order to view him with only one eye so he sees you as prey and not predator) talk to him in a soft, high-pitched, soothing voice, and eventually he’ll become more used to you. after a couple weeks then try to get him out of the cage, (again make sure his wings are clipped so he doesn’t fly off.) Next slowly allow him to get used to your hands (hand feeding him may help) then when he’s completely comfortable with you just put your index finger (the broad side) against his chest and say “step up” birds have a reflex where they will step onto anything you press gently onto their chests. do this for a few minutes a day in short training sessions and soon you’ll have a tamed bird who will step up on command and will hang out on your shoulder etc. As far as toys go you can get them at any pet store, just don’t clutter the cage, and rotate toys every few months so he doesn’t get bored. Birds do not need beds, only perches on which to sleep. Best of luck, again, please read up asap on bird care, and everything will turn out great!
